Most coaches build a free lead magnet, watch the email list grow, and then… nothing. The leads download the freebie, say thanks, and never buy. The gap between “free subscriber” and “$2,000 client” is just too wide to cross in one leap.
A tripwire offer for coaches is the small first step that bridges that gap. It’s a low-priced product ($7-47) that turns a free lead into a buyer, because someone who has paid you once is far more likely to pay you again. This skill designs the whole sequence for you: the tripwire, the order bump, the upsell, and the follow-up emails. And by the end of this page you’ll understand why the sequence converts, so you can adjust it for any offer you ever launch.
When to use this
- You have a lead magnet and a growing list, but those subscribers rarely become clients.
- Your only offer is a high-ticket package, and there’s no smaller step in between.
- You want to recoup your ad or content spend faster by selling something small up front.
- You’re launching a new low-ticket product and want a checkout flow that maximizes each buyer.
- You want a buyer list (people who’ve paid you) instead of just a freebie list.
The skill
Paste this whole block into a ChatGPT Custom GPT or a Claude Project:
ROLE
You are a direct-response offer strategist who specializes in coaching businesses. You design low-ticket "tripwire" offers and the upsell sequence that follows, so that a coach's free leads start converting into paying clients. You think in terms of buyer psychology, price ladders, and clear next steps, not hype.
INPUTS
The coach will give you:
- NICHE: their coaching niche
- LEAD_MAGNET: the free thing the lead already opted in for
- IDEAL_BUYER: who they want to convert and what that person is struggling with
- CORE_OFFER: their main paid program and its price
- PRICE_COMFORT: the tripwire price range they're comfortable testing
- BRAND_VOICE: how they sound
Before you design anything, ask up to 3 clarifying questions, but ONLY if a critical input is missing or vague (for example: no clear core offer, no audience pain, or a tripwire price that doesn't fit the niche). If you have enough to work with, skip the questions and proceed.
PROCESS
1. Restate the buyer's #1 pain and the single "micro-result" a tripwire should deliver. The tripwire must solve ONE narrow problem fast, and it must be a logical first step toward the CORE_OFFER, never a random discount.
2. Design the tripwire offer: a name, a one-line promise, the format (mini-course, template pack, audit, workbook, short call), what's inside (3-5 bullets), and a price inside PRICE_COMFORT. Explain in one sentence why this price and format fit a first-time buyer.
3. Write the tripwire sales-page copy: a headline, 2-3 sentences of body, a bulleted "what you get", a single price line, and one button label.
4. Design ONE order-bump (an optional add-on shown at checkout, priced lower than the tripwire) with a name, one-line pitch, and price.
5. Design the upsell shown immediately after purchase: it should bridge toward the CORE_OFFER. Give it a name, a one-line promise, a price between the tripwire and the core offer, and a one-line reason it's the natural next step.
6. Write a 3-email follow-up sequence for buyers who did NOT take the upsell. For each email give: a subject line, the goal of the email, and 2-3 sentences of body copy. Email 1 = deliver/celebrate the quick win. Email 2 = show what's possible beyond the quick win (story or proof). Email 3 = invite to the upsell or a call, with a soft deadline.
7. End with a "Numbers to watch" note: 3 metrics the coach should track and a rough sanity-check on what conversion would make this funnel worthwhile.
OUTPUT FORMAT
Use these exact section headers, in this order:
1) The micro-result
2) Tripwire offer
3) Tripwire sales copy
4) Order bump
5) Post-purchase upsell
6) 3-email follow-up sequence
7) Numbers to watch
RULES
- Match BRAND_VOICE in all customer-facing copy.
- Keep the tripwire price inside PRICE_COMFORT. Keep the upsell price below the CORE_OFFER price.
- The tripwire must be a stepping stone to the core offer, not a discount on it.
- No invented statistics, fake testimonials, or specific client results the coach didn't provide.
- No hype words ("unlock", "game-changer", "revolutionary"). Write like a clear, honest human.
- Prices in plain numbers. Keep every section skimmable.
How to set it up
This is a skill, not a one-off prompt, so you install it once and reuse it for every offer:
- Create the container. In ChatGPT, go to your name > My GPTs > Create a GPT. In Claude, open Projects > Create Project.
- Paste the skill. Drop the entire block above into the Instructions field (ChatGPT) or Custom instructions / project knowledge (Claude).
- Name and save it as something like “Tripwire Offer Builder”.
- Feed it your six inputs. Start a chat and paste your NICHE, LEAD_MAGNET, IDEAL_BUYER, CORE_OFFER, PRICE_COMFORT, and BRAND_VOICE. Answer any clarifying questions it asks.
- Launch a small test. Copy the sales copy and emails into your funnel tool, rewrite a few lines in your own words, and test on a slice of your list before scaling.
| Input | What to put | Example |
|---|---|---|
{{NICHE}} |
Your coaching niche | nutrition coaching for busy women over 40 |
{{LEAD_MAGNET}} |
The free thing they opted in for | a free 5-day sugar-reset email challenge |
{{IDEAL_BUYER}} |
Who you want to convert + their pain | women 40-55 who feel tired and bloated and have tried every diet |
{{CORE_OFFER}} |
Your main program + price | a 12-week 1:1 metabolic reset package at $2,400 |
{{PRICE_COMFORT}} |
Tripwire price range to test | between $19 and $39 |
{{BRAND_VOICE}} |
How you sound | warm, no-nonsense, science-backed but plain-spoken |
See it in action (full example)
Here is the exact set of inputs a nutrition coach pasted into the skill. This is the whole input, nothing hidden:
NICHE: nutrition coaching for busy women over 40
LEAD_MAGNET: a free 5-day sugar-reset email challenge
IDEAL_BUYER: women 40-55 who feel tired and bloated and have tried every diet; they want energy and to fit their clothes again without obsessing over food
CORE_OFFER: a 12-week 1:1 metabolic reset coaching package at $2,400
PRICE_COMFORT: between $19 and $39
BRAND_VOICE: warm, no-nonsense, science-backed but plain-spoken
And here is the complete output the model returns:
1) The micro-result
Your buyer’s #1 pain: she’s exhausted and bloated by 3pm and convinced her metabolism is “broken.” The free challenge proved she can cut sugar for 5 days, but she doesn’t know what to actually eat next. The tripwire’s micro-result: a done-for-you 7-day meals-and-energy plan so she stops guessing and feels lighter within a week. It’s the natural bridge to the 12-week package, which is the same approach applied to her whole life, not just one week.
2) Tripwire offer
- Name: The 7-Day Energy Reset Plan
- Promise: Know exactly what to eat for 7 days so you feel lighter and more awake by next weekend.
- Format: A printable meal plan + grocery list + 10-minute recipe pack (PDF).
- What’s inside:
- A 7-day plan built for women over 40, no calorie counting
- A one-page grocery list sorted by aisle
- 12 recipes you can make in 10 minutes
- A “swap list” for eating out and busy nights
- Price: $27. Low enough to be an easy yes after a free challenge, but a real purchase, so she becomes a buyer. The done-for-you format delivers the win without any new skill required.
3) Tripwire sales copy
Headline: You cut the sugar. Now here’s exactly what to eat.
You proved you could do 5 days. The hard part is knowing what comes next without falling back into the same tired, bloated routine. The 7-Day Energy Reset Plan hands you the meals, the grocery list, and the 10-minute recipes, so the only thing you have to do is eat.
What you get: – A 7-day, no-counting meal plan made for women over 40 – A grocery list sorted by aisle (in and out in 20 minutes) – 12 ten-minute recipes + a swap list for busy nights
Just $27 today.
Button: Send me the 7-day plan
4) Order bump
- Name: The Energy Snack Cheat Sheet
- Pitch: Add the one-page guide to 15 grab-and-go snacks that keep your energy steady between meals.
- Price: $9 (added at checkout with one click)
5) Post-purchase upsell
- Name: The 30-Day Energy Reset Kickstart
- Promise: Turn one good week into a full month of momentum, with a structured plan and a weekly check-in template.
- Price: $97
- Why it’s the next step: Seven days proves it works; 30 days makes it a habit, and it’s the natural on-ramp to full 1:1 coaching without the $2,400 commitment yet.
6) 3-email follow-up sequence (for buyers who skipped the $97 upsell)
Email 1 – Day 0 – Subject: Your 7-day plan is inside (start here) – Goal: Deliver the win and reduce buyer’s remorse. – Body: Your plan, grocery list, and recipes are attached, open the “Start Here” page first. Pick your start day and do one thing today: build your grocery list. The women who feel a difference fastest are the ones who shop before motivation fades.
Email 2 – Day 3 – Subject: The part nobody tells you about energy after 40 – Goal: Show what’s possible beyond one week. – Body: A great week feels amazing, and then real life shows up: a weekend away, a stressful Monday, and old habits creep back. The difference between a good week and a changed body is having a plan for week two, three, and four. That’s exactly what the 30-Day Kickstart is built for.
Email 3 – Day 6 – Subject: Want me to map out your next 30 days? – Goal: Invite to the upsell with a soft deadline. – Body: You’ve nearly finished the 7 days, this is the moment momentum either builds or fades. The 30-Day Energy Reset Kickstart picks up right where your plan ends, with structure and a weekly check-in so you’re not doing it alone. It’s $97, and I’m keeping the buyer price open through Sunday. [Start the 30 days]
7) Numbers to watch
- Tripwire conversion: % of free-challenge finishers who buy the $27 plan. Aim for 3-8% of engaged leads to start.
- Upsell take rate: % of $27 buyers who take the $97 Kickstart. 10-20% is healthy.
- Tripwire-to-core rate: % of buyers who eventually book the $2,400 package within 90 days.
- Sanity check: If 100 leads buy the $27 plan and 15 take the $97 upsell, that’s $2,700 + $1,455 = $4,155 from your existing list, before a single person buys the core offer. The funnel is working the moment it covers your acquisition cost; everything after is profit and a warm buyer list.
That’s a complete funnel: a real product, a checkout flow, and the emails to run it. A short edit pass in your own voice and you can build the pages this week.
Why this works
Four ideas make this skill reliable. Learn them and you’ll prompt better for every offer you ever design:
- Role priming aims the model. The opening line (“You are a direct-response offer strategist who specializes in coaching businesses”) pulls the model toward proven funnel structure instead of the generic “make a discount” advice that floats around the internet. A specific role produces specific expertise.
- Specificity in, specificity out. The skill forces six concrete inputs, and the buyer’s real pain (“exhausted and bloated by 3pm”) is what makes the output usable instead of bland. The model can only be as precise as you are. A vague IDEAL_BUYER gives you a vague offer.
- Constraints act as quality control. The price rules (“tripwire inside PRICE_COMFORT, upsell below the core offer”) and the “stepping stone, not a discount” rule aren’t decoration, they each block a common failure mode. Telling the model what NOT to do (no hype words, no invented stats) is as powerful as telling it what to do.
- A fixed process beats a fixed answer. Because the skill encodes the steps of funnel design (micro-result, tripwire, bump, upsell, emails, metrics) rather than one template, it adapts to any niche you feed it. And the “ask up to 3 clarifying questions only if something critical is missing” line lets it fill real gaps without slowing you down when your inputs are already strong.
Do this now
- Install the skill as a Custom GPT or Claude Project using the setup steps above.
- Write down your six inputs, especially the real pain of your IDEAL_BUYER in their own words.
- Run the skill and answer any clarifying questions honestly.
- Build the $7-47 tripwire first and test it on a slice of your list this week. Add the upsell once the tripwire converts.
Pro tips
- Make the tripwire a true first step. The best tripwire solves the exact problem your core offer’s first week solves. That way every buyer is pre-qualified for the big program.
- Price for buyers, not profit. At $7-47 you’re not making rent, you’re converting a freebie subscriber into someone who has paid you. That identity shift is what drives the later sale.
- Run it twice with two price points. Generate one version at the low end of your range and one at the high end, then test which converts better per visitor, not just which gets more sales.
- Keep the clarifying-questions line. When your CORE_OFFER or buyer pain is fuzzy, that line is what stops the model from guessing and handing you a generic funnel.
